More than 100 organisations have already joined forces to champion the Protection Principle, a collective call to ensure that ocean protection becomes the norm—not the exception.
As we approach the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in June 2025, momentum is building to enshrine this principle within the Nice Ocean Action Plan.
The Protection Principle affirms that the burden of proof should lie with those seeking to exploit marine environments: they must demonstrate no harm, rather than placing the responsibility on defenders of the ocean to prove damage.
The petition, spearheaded by Tara Ocean Fondation in collaboration with our partners in the Let’s Be Nice to the Ocean movement—including the Ocean & Climate Platform, Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy, TBA21, and MedPAN—is call to action toward embedding this principle into international ocean governance.
