13 December 2024: Deadline for civil society organizations seeking special accreditation
If your organization wishes to participate in the Third UN Ocean Conference (#UNOC3), but has not yet obtained or solicited its accreditation, please pay attention: the deadline is 13 December 2024.
Past this deadline, it will be too late.
Special accreditation
Non-governmental organizations, civil society and youth organizations, Indigenous Peoples’ organizations, local and regional authorities, academic institutions, the scientific community, the private sector, philanthropic organizations and other stakeholders whose work is relevant to the Ocean Conference but do not enjoy consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) or were not accredited to past UN conferences must be granted special accreditation by the UN General Assembly in order to participate in the Conference as observers.
If your organization has attended other UN Conferences (for example one of the past UN Ocean Conferences in New York 2017 or Lisbon 2022) click here to double check that you are already accredited for Nice. Or if you are not sure whether your organization enjoys consultative status with the UN ECOSOC, click here. If you are on any of those lists, you can relax for some time until when in early 2025 you will need to register the names of your representatives. If you are not on those lists, read below.
What must you do?
The second (and final!) round to seek Special Accreditation to attend the UN 2025 Ocean Conference is open until 13 December 2024. Interested organizations must apply by that deadline. Click here, scroll down, go to Register Now and follow the steps.
How does it work?
The secretariat of the Conference will review the relevance of the work of the applicant organizations including their background and involvement in the implementation and follow up of SDG 14, the Sustainable Development Goal for the Ocean.
The President of the UN General Assembly will draw up the list of recommended organizations and submit it to Member States for their consideration on a non-objection basis.
What happens if I don’t get registered?
Special accreditation gives you access to the facilities of the Nice conference, as long as you follow certain rules.
If you are not accredited you may take part in certain related activities taking place within the city and around the main venue, but you will not have access to the so-called blue zone.
